Основными задачами BIOS являются инициализация и тестирование аппаратных компонентов системы, а также загрузка загрузчика или операционной системы с устройства храрнения данных. Кроме того, BIOS обеспечивает уровень абстракции для аппаратного обеспечения, то есть последовательный способ взаимодействия прикладных программ и операционных систем с клавиатурой, дисплеем и другими устройствами ввода/вывода.
