Enlightenment, sometimes known simply as E, is a lightweight desktop environment known for its configurability and tools for creating beautiful user interfaces using its Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL). E started in 1997 as a stacking windows manager, emerging as a desktop environment with development release 0.17 (DR 0.17, more popularly known as E17). Since E17 compositing has been incorporated by default and development has focused on readying E for Wayland (advanced, but still in development as of E20).
