A desktop environment (DE) is an implementation of the desktop metaphor made of a bundle of programs which share a common graphical user interface (GUI).<br />
It is sometimes described as a graphical shell.

Als Desktop-Umgebung ("DE" -> "Desktop Environment") wird Software bezeichnet, die Programme in einer möglichst stimmigen, grafischen Bedienoberfläche ("GUI" -> "Graphical User Interface") zusammenfasst. Manchmal wird dies - angelehnt an die "Text Shell" - auch als "Graphische Shell" beschrieben.
