About Manjaro

Overview

Manjaro is a user-friendly Linux distribution based on the independently developed Arch operating system. Within the Linux community, Arch itself is renowed for being an exceptionally fast, powerful, and lightweight up-to-date distribution that provides access to the very latest cutting edge - and bleeding edge - software.

However, Arch is also aimed at more experienced or technically-minded users. As such, it is generally considered to be out of reach of those who lack the technical expertise (or persistence) required to use it. For example, Arch adopts a 'do it yourself' approach, whereby it is necessary to build and configure your system from the ground up, starting just with a text-based command line.

Manjaro provides all the benfits of the Arch operating system coupled with a focus on user-friendliness and accessability. Intended to apply to a wide user-base - from newcomers to experienced Arch users - Manjaro is designed to work 'straight out of the box' with:

  • A pre-installed desktop environment (called XFCE)
  • Pre-installed software applications (including Libre Office, Skype, Firefox, and the VLC Media player)
  • Pre-installed codecs necessary play multimedia files (e.g. MP3s, flash videos, DVDs, etc.)
  • A simplifed, user-friendly installation process including:
  • Automatic detection of your computer hardware (e.g. graphics cards)
Automatic installation of the necessary software (e.g. graphics drivers) to best use your computer hardware

However, Majaro is much more than just an easy-to-install version of Arch (there are the Archbang and Bridge distributions for that), as covered in the features section, below

Features

Manjaro shares many of the same features as Arch, including:

  • Speed, power, and efficiency
  • Access to the very latest cutting and bleeding edge software
  • A 'rolling release' development model providing the most up-to-date system possible without the need to install later versions
  • The versatility to be shaped and moulded to your own unique tastes and preferences, ranging from desktop environments to system processes

Manjaro also boasts a few special extra features of its own. In addition to those already pointed out in the overview, these include:

  • Support for the easy installation and use of multiple kernels
  • Its own dedicated software repositories to ensure stability
